Thinking of Getting a Pet?

Here are the ultimate tips to prepare!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year - puppy and kitten season! As the weather gets warmer, we see an increase in what we call ‘Puppy and Kitten Season.’ This is when folks tend to welcome new pets into their home. No one wants to potty train in the sub-zero winter! Of course, you can welcome a furry friend of any age into your home this season. We’ve put together some essentials to set you and your new companion up for success together.

Pet-Proof the Home

  • Before your new addition trots through the door, pet-proof your space. Tuck away electrical cords, secure trash can lids, and remove any toxic plants or dangers that can be irresistible (and harmful!) to a curious snout. Creating a safe environment lets your pet explore with fewer worries.

Secure Health Insurance from Day One

  • Just like human medicine, pet health insurance is recommended for every visit. Emergencies can pop up with a new pet in the home. We are happy to work with any provider you may currently be insured with, but recommend Trupanion for direct payment at checkout or Pumpkin for Wellness coverage.

Establish a Care Routine

  • From microchipping and vaccinations to selecting the right nutrition, establishing a care routine is vital. Don't wait — schedule a vet visit early to set up a care plan. This step is key to your pet's long-term health and happiness. Also, starting early can help associate going to the vet as a positive thing!

Allow Them to Acclimate on Their Own Time

  • It's normal to want to shower your new pet with affection, but remember, the big move can be overwhelming. Give your puppy or kitten space to come out of their shell on their own time, without forcing interactions, so they feel secure and supported as they get to know their new world.

The Art of Socialization

  • The prime time to socialize is 2-7 weeks for a kitty and 3-12 weeks for a puppy. Gradual introduction to new experiences, humans, and other pets during this period is influential for their development. It can be tempting to bring your new buddy everywhere with you - the patio at your favorite restaurant or the Target down the block - but it’s best to limit these types of interactions while they are adjusting to their new life.

Adequate Rest Is a Must

  • Puppies and kittens aren’t the best at self-regulation. Their tiny bodies need plenty of downtime to grow and flourish. Dedicate a comfy, quiet spot for your pet to retreat to when they need rest. It's a busy world - ensure they have a peaceful corner of their own to recharge and dream of their next adventure!
