Signs of Heat Stroke

Friends and Felines,

Our cats handle heat differently than we do. While we have sweat glands throughout our bodies to help control our temperature. Cats have only a limited number of these glands. It’s up to us as good pet parents to help our furry friends stay cool during these hot Chicago summers!

What can cause heat stroke?

  • Temperatures over 80 degrees Fahrenheit some text (*Note: Cooler temperatures can also cause heat stroke, however you should take extra safety measures once the temperature rises above 80!)

  • Inadequate ventilation

  • Lack of shade

  • Lack of access to water

  • Excessive exercise

What are signs of heat stroke?

Our feline friends are very clever at hiding when they are uncomfortable or experiencing pain. For this reason, it's imperative that we pay close attention to any behavioral changes during these warmer months. Signs of heat stroke in cats include:

  • Seeking a cooler spot

  • Fast panting

  • Delirium

  • Pacing

  • Muscle tremors

  • Bleeding from the nose

  • Dizziness

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Red gums

If you notice your cat exhibiting any signs of heat stroke, get them to the nearest emergency veterinarian immediately. Until you actually arrive at the ER, you can spray cool (not freezing,) water to them.

We hope you find these tips useful and that they help keep your cats cool this summer! Don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. We're always here for you and your cats!

Always at Their Service,
The BLVD Cat Team
