Winter Weight Watchers: Helping Your Pet Stay Fit When the Weather Turns Frosty
As the temperatures drop and the cozy blankets come out, many of us find ourselves trading evening walks for couch time, and salads for… well, comfort food. Don’t worry, we’re not judging! But just as we tend to slow down a little in the winter, our furry friends often do too, and that can mean a few extra pounds sneaking up on them before springtime.
As your friendly neighborhood veterinary team, we see this pattern every year: shorter days, less outdoor activity, and lots of extra treats “because it’s chilly out.” Unfortunately, those few extra snacks and skipped walks can add up fast, and even a couple pounds can have a big impact on your pet’s joints, heart, and overall health.
So before we all hibernate for the season, here are a few simple ways to keep your pet at a healthy weight through the winter months:
🦴 1. Don’t skip the exercise; just get creative!
When the weather’s too cold for long walks or backyard playtime, try some indoor fun. Laser pointers, feather wands, or a few minutes of fetch down the hallway can keep your pet’s body and brain active. Puzzle feeders or treat balls are also a great way to make mealtime a little workout.
🍗 2. Watch the winter “snack creep.”
It’s easy to fall into the habit of sharing a few bites from your plate or tossing an extra treat because “it’s just one.” (We’ve all been there.) Try measuring treats into a small bowl each morning—once they’re gone, that’s it for the day. Your pet will still feel loved, and you’ll have an easy way to track what they’re eating.
🐾 3. Keep an eye on their shape, not just the scale.
You should be able to feel your pet’s ribs easily without pressing hard, and see a slight waistline when looking from above. If your pet’s starting to resemble a furry loaf of bread, it may be time to cut back portions a little or increase playtime.
🩺 4. Ask us for a weight check or nutrition advice.
We’re always happy to help you figure out your pet’s ideal weight and the right feeding plan to maintain it. Sometimes a simple adjustment, like switching to a lower-calorie food or adjusting portion sizes, can make a big difference.
❤️ 5. Remember, maintaining weight is caring.
Keeping your pet fit helps them feel better, move easier, and live longer. It’s one of the kindest things you can do for them.
So, as we all settle into the cozy season with hot cocoa and fuzzy socks, let’s make sure our pets stay healthy and ready to bounce into spring without needing to “shed” more than their winter coat!
If you’d like help evaluating your pet’s body condition or setting up a winter wellness plan, give us a call or stop by the clinic. We’re happy to help keep those tails wagging and those paws light on their feet!
