Purrfect Plans for the New Year: Pet and Pawrent New Year’s Resolutions! 🐶🐾😺

As we turn the page into a fresh new year, many of us are thinking about ways to build healthier habits, feel more balanced, and start fresh. But what if our pets could join us in those goals?

The bond we share with our animals is one of the most motivating (and heartwarming!) forces in our lives. Pets have an incredible way of keeping us grounded, encouraging us to move, lifting our spirits, and reminding us to enjoy the little things. So this year, we thought it would be fun to flip the script and help pet parents and their pets make resolutions together.

From daily enrichment and nutrition resets to wellness visits, dental care, and simple routines that improve mental health for both ends of the leash, these resolutions are designed to strengthen your connection and support wellness for the whole family! Enjoy this list, and let us know if you think of a few of your own pet and pawrent goals for 2026!

🐾 1. Move More, Together

Pet Resolution: Get in more neighborhood sniff-ventures, hikes, or indoor enrichment play sessions.
Pet-Parent Resolution: Use this as your mindful movement time! Ten minutes can make a big difference in the grand scheme of your day.

🧠 2. Add a Dash of Enrichment

Pet Resolution: Rotate toys, try puzzle feeders, or teach them a new trick. The American Animal Hospital Association has loads of great information and best practices for pet parents when it comes to training tips and enrichment ideas. BLVD Vet is also AAHA Accredited and our Veterinarians love to chat about easy enrichment opportunities for your pets at home!
Pet-Parent Resolution: Pair it with a small daily brain break of your own with a puzzle, some doodling, or quiet time away from scrolling on your phone. Our friends over at Live Like Roo have a super cute coloring book that makes a great mindfulness activity if you enjoy coloring. Plus, all proceeds go to helping pets that have been diagnosed with cancer!

😺 3. Cat-ify & De-clutter

Pet Resolution: Enjoy more vertical space, cozy perches, and scratching posts. Cats love to have options in their space! The Feline AVMA has lots of helpful resources and ideas to help enrich your kitty’s space!
Pet-Parent Resolution: For each enrichment upgrade, pick one area of your home to tidy, declutter, or donate.

🍽️ 4. Start a Nutrition Reset

Pet Resolution: Reassess their diet, treats, and feeding routine to match age, lifestyle, and health needs. It’s amazing what you learn when you dig into nutrition labels with your veterinarian!
Pet-Parent Resolution: Choose one nutrition habit for yourself: better hydration, mindful snacking, or prepping a healthy lunch twice a week. Heck, maybe it’s simply fewer trips to the food ordering apps in 2026! 👀

Pro tip: Nutrition & Weight ConsultationKick off healthy eating habits together! Book a wellness exam and receive a nutrition/weight review tailored to your pet.
We’ll help you choose appropriate food, portion sizes, and treat strategies to support their goals for 2026.

🩺 5. Schedule a Wellness Check

Pet Resolution: Come in for an annual exam and create personalized health goals: weight, mobility, dental care, anxiety management, and more.
Pet-Parent Resolution: When you book your pet’s appointment, go ahead and schedule your own checkup, or be extra brave and book that long-overdue dental visit for yourself!

🪥 6. Fresh Breath for All

Pet Resolution: Commit to better dental habits! Brushing, dental treats, water additives, or scheduling that recommended cleaning go a long way in extending the life of your pets teeth and gums. It can also help in the bad breath department!
Pet-Parent Resolution: Improve your own dental routine to match: flossing, brushing, or booking your next cleaning.

Pro tip: Get Ahead of Dental MonthFresh starts = fresh breath!
Ask us about professional dental cleanings and home dental care tools or tricks. We know it can seem daunting, but are here to help break it down for you to make it more accessible!

💗 7. Prioritize Calm & Connection

Pet Resolution: Practice structured downtime, calming routines, or relaxing enrichment.
Pet-Parent Resolution: Take a few slow breaths with your pet each day. Tiny mindfulness moments add up! Maybe this looks like taking a moment together on the park bench before heading home from a walk or taking an extra moment to appreciate your kitty during a brushing session. Those purrs work wonders on the nervous system!

🎓 8. Learn Something New Together

Pet Resolution: Try a training class, agility, scentwork, or trick training. Not only is this great enrichment for your pet, it’s a fun time for pet owners too! It’s also a great way to build community if you’re able to connect with other pet parents while doing this.
Pet-Parent Resolution: Pick something new for yourself too! Learning boosts confidence for humans and animals alike. Maybe download a free app to learn a new language or go to a community art class!

Pro tip: Up Your Skills for The CommunitySearch “Paint Your Pet Fundraisers” to find events where you can paint your pet and make a difference. Art City Chicago hosts these kinds of events on occasion, and 10% of the proceeds goes to various animal shelters in the community. In December, it was Chicago Canine Rescue!

🎁 9. Give Back as a Team

Pet Resolution: Donate a toy, blanket, or food to a shelter. We all know a trip to the pet store together is a blast, but it can also help your community if your pup helps you pick out a few donations!
Pet-Parent Resolution: Volunteer or donate in a small, consistent way each month. Our friends at the Anti-Cruelty Society are always in need of more volunteers of all ages!

💞 10. Reinforce What Matters Most

Pet Resolution: Receive more patience, praise, and predictable routines.
Pet-Parent Resolution: Celebrate the joy your pet brings you every day because those small moments are what matter most. Each day that we get with our furry family members is a gift, so resolve to take it all in this coming year with an extra dose of gratitude.

Here’s to a year guided by connection, not perfection, and a whole lot of gratitude for the pets who make every day brighter. Please reach out and let us know how we can support you and your pet in the new year!
